FAQ

Feel free to email us your questions if we have not answered your question below.

When ordering a custom frame or empty frame online, you will notice two different size measurements. Understanding the difference ensures your artwork fits perfectly.

  1. Un-Framed Size (Your Image Size)

The Un-Framed Size is the exact measurement of the physical image, photo, or artwork you want to frame.

  • What to do: Simply measure your print and enter these exact dimensions when ordering.
  1. Framed Size (Total Outer Dimensions)

The Framed Size is the total outer size of the finished picture frame once it is ready to hang on your wall.

  • This size changes depending on the width of the frame profile you choose.

Important Note: The final outer framed size can vary by up to 15mm due to the internal rebate of the frame.

The Frame Rebate is the inner lip or recess on the inside of the frame where your glass, artwork, and backing board sit.

  • Why it matters: Depending on the style you choose, the rebate is usually between 5mm and 15mm.
  • The result: Because the artwork must sit securely under this lip so it doesn’t fall out, the rebate will slightly overlap the very edge of your image.

Tip: Keep this small overlap in mind if you have important signatures or details right at the very edge of your print!

A mat board (also known as a “mount”) is a specialized, thick cardboard-like material that sits between your image and the glass of the frame. It serves both an aesthetic and a protective purpose for your artwork or photography.

At Just Picture Framing Online, we use high-quality, acid-free mat boards to ensure your memories are preserved for years to come which come and many colours and can be cut to your desired width.

Important Sizing Note: The “Mat Opening”

When ordering a mat board, the “opening” (the cutout hole) is typically cut 2-3 mm smaller than your image size.

Why? This ensures the mat board slightly overlaps your photo so it doesn’t fall through the hole!

Adding a mat board to your custom frame offers two primary benefits:

  1. Visual Appeal & Focus

A mat board creates a “window” for your image, providing a clean border that draws the eye toward the artwork. It adds a professional, gallery-style finish and can be used to:

  • Create Breathing Room: It prevents the frame from “crowding” the image.
  • Add Contrast: Choosing a colour that complements your photo can make the colours “pop.”
  • Resize Art: It allows a smaller photo to fit beautifully into a much larger frame.
  1. Essential Protection

The most important technical job of a mat board is to create a gap between the image and the glass. * Prevents Damage: Without a mat, your photo can press against the glass. Over time, changes in humidity can cause the image to “fuse” or stick to the glass, leading to permanent damage.

  • Airflow: The slight space allows the paper to breathe, preventing mold or buckling.

At Just Picture Framing Online, we believe that receiving your custom frame should be the start of something beautiful—not a trip to the hardware store. That’s why every frame we craft comes fully equipped with professional-grade hanging hardware at no extra cost.

What’s Included with Every Order?

  • Heavy-Duty D-Rings: High-quality steel D-rings are pre-installed on the back of your frame. These provide a secure anchor point and are far more durable than standard “sawtooth” hangers.
  • Professional Hanging String: We provide high-tensile framing cord pre-strung to the D-rings, ensuring your artwork sits flush and secure against the wall.

Easy Installation in Seconds

We take the guesswork out of DIY framing. Whether you are hanging a small family photo or a large gallery piece, our hardware is:

  • Pre-Measured: Positioned perfectly for balance and stability.
  • Multi-Directional: We install the hardware based on the orientation (Landscape or Portrait) you selected in our Online Framing Studio.
  • Safe & Secure: Rated to support the weight of your specific frame and glazing choice.

Hanging Tip: For larger frames, we recommend using two wall hooks spaced slightly apart. This distributes the weight more evenly and helps keep your frame level over time!

Need a Custom Hanging Solution?

If you have a specific requirement—such as security hangers for a public space or extra-heavy-duty wire—simply leave a note in your order or contact our team before we start production.

When customizing your frame in our Online Picture Framing Studio, you can select your preferred finish under the “Glass” tab. We offer four distinct options to suit your budget, style, and display environment.

Our Glazing Options:

  • No Glass: Best for oil paintings on canvas or items that do not require surface protection.
  • Clear Glass: The classic choice for most framing. It provides excellent clarity and a traditional finish for photos and prints.
  • Non-Reflective Glass: Ideal for rooms with high light levels or windows. This glass is etched to diffuse light, significantly reducing glare and reflections so you can see your art from any angle.
  • Perspex (Acrylic) Glazing: A high-quality, shatter-resistant alternative to traditional glass. Perspex is lightweight and durable, making it the safest option for large frames or items being shipped long distances.

Which Glazing is Right for You?

Things you should know about Picture Framing

Picture Frames & Photo Frames

Picture and photo frames protects and complements the artworks, photos, jerseys, posters and objects and images.

Picture frames have traditionally been made of wood, which is still the most common material, although other materials used include plastic, synthetic and aluminium. A picture frame may be of any colour or texture, some picture frames have elaborate mouldings which may relate to the subject matter. Just Picture Framing has over 200 mouldings to choose from and can source any type of mould if requested.

Picture frames come in a variety of profiles, but generally the lengths of moulding feature a “lip” and rabbet, the function of which is to allow a space to hold in the materials in the frame. The lip extends usually about a quarter of an inch past the edge of the rabbet.

The picture frame may contain glass or acrylic to protect the picture. In some instances where the art in the frame is dispensable or durable, no protection may be necessary. Glass is common over photos, prints and objects and other, but rare over oil paintings, except very valuable ones in some museums.

Mat Boards

In the picture framing industry, a mat (mount) is a thin, flat piece of paper type material included within a picture frame, which serves as additional decoration and to perform several other, more practical functions, such as separating the art from the glass.

The picture-framing mat is most commonly known for its use as additional decoration to enhance the look of a framed piece, sometimes in conjunction. Although matting usually contains only one opening per layer, it may contain none if a picture is “float-mounted” or “top-mounted” (placed on top of the mat).

Typically the mat or mats, if matched carefully and properly proportioned, serve to help draw the eye in towards the framed piece, or towards a particular key element of the piece.

At Just Picture Framing we have a computerized mat-cutting system which ensures the most accurate and professional mat board is cut to complement the photo frame. We cut the window as per you image or window size so please ensure you take an overlap in consideration when entering the picture size.

Here at Just Picture Framing we have over 50 different colours to choose from, if we do not have the colour you are after we can always match the colour for you and order the colour you are after.

Just Picture Framing Only uses the best Mat Boards on the market which are Archival, Conservation and Acid Free. Archival & conservation picture framing, mats have several important functions. One of the most important functions is that it separates the glass from the art or document being framed; this is primarily important because any condensation that develops on the inside of the glass can be transferred to the piece if they are not separated, resulting in water damage & mold creation.

Photos should also be separated from the glass because the surface of photographs is particularly easy to damage, and may even separate from its original paper and stick to the glass if wet; for this reason, any framed photograph of value should be framed in such a way that the glass does not directly contact the photo. Additionally, some types of art, such as pastel or chalk pictures, can smudge easily and should be separated from the glass for that reason.

Another reason that Just Picture Framing used Acid Free Mat Boards is because of the possibility of Mat Burns. Acidic mats can cause what is called mat burn, brown marks that creep in from the outside onto the displayed piece itself. While mat burn is sometimes reversible through cleaning the piece, cleaning may not be feasible if the piece was executed in water-soluble inks or paints, such as watercolour. Thus, it is important to know if the mats used are acid-free if the piece is to be preserved for a long time.
